Horse-Drawn Carriages as a Means of Transport
The wheels of a horse-drawn carriage rattle along the stony path, the sound of horses’ bells rings out at the horses’ strides and Heidi and Dete sit on the carriage. In Johanna Spyri’s time the horse-drawn carriages were an important means of transport. However, it was also then that the railway experienced an enormous upswing and soon replaced the horse-drawn carriages as the most important means of long-distance transport.
