The Living Room

The living room is the central place for Heidi and her grandfather “Alpöhi”, where most of the living together takes place in the winter, because this room is heated. Alpöhi carves spoons, the grandmother spins yarn and Heidi teaches Peter to read by candlelight. Work was mainly done from sunrise to sunset. The light in the evening consisted of tallow lights or candles, which brought rather dull light into the living room. Tired from the day’s work, people gladly went to bed early.
